He reported a case in which 7.5 gm. of phenylhydrazine hydrate had been administered in eighteen months. Death occurred from erysipelas. Necropsy showed cirrhosis of the liver, but Levi did not consider the drug necessarily causal, as cirrhosis of the liver is often noted in cases of polycythemia vera untreated with phenylhydrazine. Studies of the function of the liver following the administration of phenylhydrazine have not been numerous.
