Abstract
In a box containing a polyatomic gas, the combination of a temperature gradient and an external magnetic field can cause a slip of the molecules along the walls with a characteristic velocity. The resulting thermomagnetic pressure difference is investigated for N 2, HD, CO, CO 2, CH 4, CF 4 and SF 6 at room temperature. The connections of this effect with the thermomagnetic torque (Scott effect) are discussed.
