Abstract

Online education seems to be the hottest new trend in higher education. When Jones International University, for example, became the first fully accredited college to offer courses exclusively over the Internet last March, the event was held up as a sign of the future—for good or ill—in news accounts and faculty discussions across the country. Last fall's creation of Western Governors University, a web-based institution that draws on the resources of colleges in 17 western states and Guam, was greeted with similar attention. Don't apply to Jones International University, however, if your interest is in studying chemistry. That university offers only two degree programs—a bachelor's or master's in business communications—and not a single course in chemistry. Western Governors University's offerings, while much broader, don't include courses in chemistry, either.
