Abstract

Abstract We have attempted to shed light on the significance of weathering processes in the early Archaean. The most useful parameters to describe the situation on the very early Earth are the state of the atmosphere and hydrosphere, the surface temperature, and the oxidation state. We describe an apparatus and experiments designed to test models of exogenic processes in the early Archaean, by subjecting mafic and ultramafic rocks to possible early Archaean weathering conditions. Preliminary results are encouraging.
