Abstract

Tsunami wave force acting on a spherical storage tank located in coastal areas is measured and discussed for future tsunamis in this study. The horizontal and vertical components of tsunami wave force are measured in a series of hydraulic experiments. In the experiments, bore waves like tsunamis are generated in a two-dimensional wave flume by opening a gate at a reservoir. The horizontal tsunami wave force has several crests which correspond to the crests of the inundation depth. The horizontal tsunami wave force is approximately estimated by drag force. The time series of the vertical tsunami wave force show downward force in several moments as well as upward force. The measured vertical tsunami wave force is much smaller than the buoyancy acting on the spherical storage tank because of the flow between the bottom of the spherical storage tank and the surface of the storage site.
