Abstract
Some experiments on the oscillations of the balance beam have been carried out undervaried conditions using different kinds of weights on the pan, and the periods of the oscillations in each case have been carefully observed. The experiments revealed that the motions in question are produced, first, by elastic deformation at the tip of knife edge, having the nature of rocking, and secondly, by the more essential nature of the construction of the balance, that is, the weights on the pan and the fluid friction corresponding to the nature of material of the knife-edge, etc..
