Abstract

It has been shown that gentamycin incorporated into polymethylmethacrylate (TJ bone cement or O-PMMA) can be released in the body. It can be continuously set free into the surroundings in therapeutic concentration in vivo for at least 10 months and inhibit several kinds of pathogenic bacteria for a prolonged period of time, e.g., Staphylococcus aureus for 300 days. It does not influence mechanical strength of TJ bone cement when 1 g of gentamycin powder is added to 20 g of cement. The present study offers a theoretical basis for the prevention of sepsis following artificial joint replacement and for the treatment of chronic osteomyelitis with domestic gentamycin-PMMA. A gentamycin-PMMA chain has been successfully made.
