Abstract

ABSTRACT A reliable fire extinguishing system is an effective measure to reduce the risk of ship fire. Based on a typical large space cabin platform, the experiments on the fire extinguishing performance of different fire extinguishing systems (high-expansion foam, aqueous film-forming foam and water spray) against oil pool fire (6 MW) and wood stack fire (0.3 MW) were carried out. The results show that for oil pool fire, the fire extinguishing performance of aqueous film-forming foam system is higher than that of high-expansion foam system. The fire extinguishing performance of high-expansion foam system is significantly affected by the relative location of high-expansion foam generator, fire source and obstacle. For wood stack fire, the fire extinguishing performance of water spray system is the best, and the fire extinguishing time is only 25 s, followed by the aqueous film-forming foam system (54 s) and the high expansion foam system (66 s).
