Abstract

With very high upper critical magnetic field (H c2 ) and critical current density (J c ), Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O x (Bi-2212) is one of the most promising materials for high-field applications. Experimental research on Bi-2212 cable-in-conduit conductor (CICC) is now carried out at the Institute of Plasma Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. High pressure heat treatment process was adopted to improve the performance of Bi-2212 wires and CICC. The Bi-2212 CICC sample was heat treated with high pressure of 50 atm and tested in liquid helium (LHe). In this paper, the manufacturing procedures and test method of Bi-2212 CICC sample are described in detail. The performance of Bi-2212 CICC was evaluated by the critical current of strands and performance comparison was made between the Bi-2212 CICC samples with different heat treatment pressure. The test results showed that there was only about 5% degradation with respect to single wire critical current data and the conductor critical current was increased by 102% with 50 atm overpressure processing.
