Abstract

Helium volumetric recombination under energetic helium ion flow was investigated using a radio-frequency plasma source and an ion beam injector. Visible and ultraviolet light emission was compared with and without energetic ion injection. In the beam injection case, line emissions from helium Rydberg atoms decreased whereas no clear difference was observed in electron temperature determined using continuum emission, which insists that bulk plasma properties were not affected by energetic ions but population density distribution of atoms. It was indicated that the charge exchange momentum transfer from energetic ions to Rydberg atoms and ion impact transition could account for the emission intensity reduction.
