Abstract

Differential cross sections for the neutrons resulting from the reaction π −p → π 0 π 0n at 447 MeV have been measured for angles ranging from 20° to 60° in the lab system. The experimental missing-mass spectrum has a noticeable enhancement over the phase space distribution in the region of large masses, and some excess in the region of small masses. The angular distribution for neutrons in the c.m.s. has a sharp asymmetry with a predominant backward production of neutrons. The total cross section of the reaction π −p → π 0 π 0n at 447 MeV is found to be 1.90 ± 0.25 mb.
