Abstract

The work deals with the study of Fe-B-C ternary system from the viewpoint of the phase composition in the boron-rich region. Phase composition and the phase chemical analysis of Fe-(30-60)B-C alloys were investigated by means of the x-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy equipped with EDXS analyzer, after long term annealing at two temperatures, 600 °C (873 K) and 900 °C (1173 K). The experimental results are compared with thermodynamic calculation of Fe-B-C phase diagram and a modification of the phase diagram to include the solubility of carbon in borides is suggested and modelled.
