Abstract

Studies of mode conversion phenomena, have been undertaken, using ultrasonic mode conversion techniques. The approach was first investigated using laser techniques to identify the likely mechanisms. This was followed by immersion experiments using either conventional piezoelectric transducers or pulsed laser generation. It will be shown that mode conversion of an incident longitudinal wave to either shear or Rayleigh waves at a surface defect may have practical application to materials evaluation.
