Abstract

Experiments have been performed to determine the effect of buoyancy on convection heat transfer for transitional and turbulent water flow between horizontal parallel plates. In transitional flow, Nusselt numbers at the top and bottom plates decrease and increase, respectively, with increasing heat flux. Results for the top plate are attributed to boundary-layer laminarization, while those for the bottom plate are attributed to heat transfer enhancement by free convection. For turbulent flow, top plate heat transfer data are correlated by an expression for pure forced convection, while bottom plate data are correlated by an expression for mixed convection.
