Abstract

The aim of this work is to specify experimental conditions which allow to obtain the finest possible line widths (FWHM) of atomic transitions in a laser‐produced plasma at reduced pressure. For the initial stage of the plasma expansion (<1 μs) an expansion model of the plasma plume is developed by means of pictures taken with a gated intensified CCD camera. Full line widths and line intensities of investigated copper transitions obtained by high resolution spectrometry are related to the spatial position in the plasm plume with this novel cartography. The influence of different relevant plasma parameters on the line width is discussed. Best values of full line widths of 0.1 Å were obtained for the Cu‐I transition 5105 Å.
