Abstract

Rates of laminar heat transfer in axial fluid flow through triangular and square arrays of cylinders were investigated experimentally for the case of cylinders in contact with one another. The experiments were conducted by using ducts of the same cross sections formed by both arrays of contacting cylinders, and the boundary condition of uniform temperature at the cylinder wall was substantially achieved.Reasonable agreement was found between the logarithmic mean Nusselt numbers obtained from the experiments and those predicted by the authors' previous numerical solutions when a Sieder-Tate type of viscosity ratio correction was applied to account for the effect of variation in fluid viscosity.
