Abstract

This work presents the results of experimental studies carried out at CIGELE on the electrical performance of a short ice-covered insulator under switching and lightning impulse voltages. It was found that the presence of ice decreases the V/sub 50%/ of the insulator under both negative and positive switching impulse voltages. However, this effect is less evident under lightning impulse voltage. The results are useful for design considerations of outdoor insulators in cold climate regions.
