Abstract

The channelling effects on a (110) plane of vanadium single crystal with 2 MeV protons are investigated by the study of the cross-section of the 51V(p,n) 51Cr nuclear reaction. Neutrons are detected by means of a time-of-flight method, and so energy measurements are possible. The channeling effect is correlated to the observation of a minimum in the cross section of the reaction. The attenuation rate is 36% for the reactions occuring near the surface of the crystal. The effect decreases exponentially with the depth where the reaction occurs in the crystal. An attenuation is also observed as a function of the integrated proton flux. This effect is reduced by a factor two when the integrated flux reaches 4 × 10 16 protons/mm 2.
