Abstract

Considerable amount of work has been done in the past to study the effect of internal arcing in GIS on the pressure rise and the burn-through. This paper continues the earlier work1 by members of CIGRE SC 23.03, where an attempt was made to relate the pressure rise to the design parameters of the GIS as well as stresses relevant to the power supply network. Although the agreement between the measured and calculated results was fairly good, major deviations noticed in some cases could not be explained satisfactorily. This is assumed to be due to the poor quality of the measuring equipment then available in the high power laboratories and also due to unaccounted portions of energy during the investigations. Partial results from a research program intended to fill these gaps by applying modern digital measuring equipment, well-defined test arrangements and various contact materials2,3 are reported in this paper.
