Abstract

In modern indoor lighting, increasing consideration has been given to quality of lighting as well as quantity of light. The discomfort glare is one of the most important factors in the quality of lighting. Various methods of evaluating the discomfort glare have been published, and several countries such as England, United States, Germany have gradually stipulated the acceptable degree of discomfort glare in their lighting codes.British IES glare index system is one of the examples. Experimental observations and subjective appraisals of discomfort glare in the laboratory and actual lighting installations were carried out to study the British IES glare index system. The following conclusions were reached from these experiments ; computed glare indices based on the formula of the Brilish IES glare index system agree well to the degree of the discomfort glare evaluated by observers employed in the experiments, and the formula can be used to determine the discomfort glare in practical lighting installations with a reasonable accuracy.
