Abstract

Biomass gasification is a thermo-chemical means of conversion of solid biomass to a gaseous fuel called producer gas. In the present work, experiments were done on a fully co-current flow biomass gasifier with the objective of analyzing certain process parameters and the effect of biomass bed height on them. Bed temperatures and pressures along the gasifier, changes in mass, volume, density, and volatile matter content of bed biomass at different levels along the gasifier height, gas composition, etc., were determined. It was observed that during gasification the air supply pressure was 12 times greater than that in an unfired condition. There was temperature stratification in the bed and the location of reaction front controlled the producer gas generation. Mass, volume, density, and volatile matter content of bed biomass were decreasing down the gasifier and their reduction percentages were determined.
