Abstract

Experimental studies were carried out in 80 dogs regarding the effects of acidosis and alkalosis on coronary sinus pH, pO2, pCO2 potassium and lactic acid, and myocardial function and contractile force following normothermic aortic occlusion. In control animals severe degrees of acidosis were observed after 30 minutes of occlusion. Pretreatment with THAM or, to a lesser extent, sodium bicarbonate resulted in a decrease in the degree of acidosis associated with aortic occlusion and a corresponding improvement in myocardial function and contractile force.
