Abstract

AbstractThe application of laser backscattering to the characterization of fiber surface roughness was studied experimentally using instruments based on optical Fourier transforms. Applications included comparing surface roughness of various fibers, measuring the effect of fiber delustering with TiO2 and detecting surface crystallization. The optical transform method was found to be a simple means of providing nonintrusive, real‐time measurements of fiber surface structure.
