Abstract

In the last five years Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) systems attracted a lot of attention, especially related to the detection of buried land mines. Much research is done in the field of GPR modeling, processing and technology. However, the GPR system performance is still limited It is believed that major improvement can be achieved in the antenna design. The GPR antenna design principles differs from the classical approach. The main difference from antennas operating in air is the ground, with its varying and non-homogeneous properties, as operating medium. IRCTR is developing new antenna concepts to improve GPR performance. Essential for the antenna design is a reliable antenna measurement set-up. Since little is described in literature on GPR antenna measurements, we developed a novel measurement technique. This paper describes and demonstrates applicability of this technique by showing typical measurement results.
