Abstract

The advantages of broadband communication networks are outlined. The activities developed in the framework of the Sub-Project 5 of the C.N.R. Telecommunications Project are presented: the study and implementation of LANs and MANs using different communication links (optical fibres, satellite systems and also, for urban areas, microwave systems); the study of high speed optical communication networks (deflection networks and multi-hop networks); the experiments on advanced services, carried out mainly for the scientific users. Two services are in particular outlined, teleeducation and telemedicine, on which experiments are planned with the aim of exploiting the capabilities of the broadband communication networks. Some indications are also given on the geographical areas, that are candidate for LANs-MANs implementation and experiments performance.
