Abstract

Silicon pin diodes exhibit a multistable current voltage characteristic. Experiments show that each jump is generally accompanied by the formation of a current filament. The solitary character of these structures is established by measurements of the spatially resolved potential and temperature distributions and the optical IR-absorption between the contacts.
