Abstract
T irritant properties have been attributed to acrylic resin by many authors.‘-’ Special attention has been given to residual monomer and to additional components added to the material during its production process. The possibility of tissue reaction to denture base material is often discussed in the literature. Investigations have been made to estimate the concentration of residual monomer in polymerized acrylic material, and the results revealed many factors which influenced its level.‘. ‘. w However, there are no reports in the available literature which deal with the degree of monomer toxicity in relation to living tissues based on clinical or experimental studies. The lack of data on this subject has encouraged experimental studies on the influence of methyl methacrylate upon living cells in vitro. The purposes were to determine the toxicity threshold of monomer and its lowest lethal concentration, as well as to find out whether the additional components used to improve the material for use in prosthetic dentistry increase cytotoxicity.
