Abstract

An Mg-0.8Al-0.1Ca-0.4Mn (AXM080104, wt%) alloy was developed with extraordinary extrudability. The mechanical properties and strain rate sensitivity of the alloy were evaluated under various strain rates. The as-extruded alloy exhibited a tensile 0.2% proof stress of 222 MPa and an ultimate tensile strength of 380 MPa at the strain rate of 500/s. The performance of the extruded AXM080104 is superior to that of the AZ31 alloy at the high strain rate. The deformation mechanism of the extruded AXM080104 was examined and analyzed. The high strength is attributed to the simultaneous activation of multiple slip systems, and then a large number of dislocations are packed and entangled at the grain boundaries to cause work hardening.
