Abstract

Masonry structures are widely used, but it exists some inherent defects, such as low tensile, anti-shear and flexural strength, and poor seismic performance. The engineered cementitious composites (ECC) is a new concrete material with characteristics of high strength, high toughness, which can effectively improve the inherent defects of brittle materials. This paper presents a method that both faces of masonry wall are strengthened by ECC layer, for the purpose, the author produced a total of four specimens, which contains two strengthened and two un-strengthened specimens, and carried out the quasi-static tests. The results showed that the bonding properties between ECC surface layer and brick wall is good. The application of ECC layer can effectively limit the crack and destruction of the masonry wall, improve the shear brittle failure mode and the damage tolerance of the wall, and reduce strengthening costs after the shock of the masonry structure.
