Abstract

Innovative materials are developed these days for automotive and structural applications. The properties of these materials are designed based on its use and applications. Specific metals such as aluminium matrix with reinforcement of silicon carbides are added to the materials to strengthen the hybrid material. This paper brings in the use of a composite material AA2219 reinforced with tungsten carbide to study the wear test and hardness test of this material which was fabricated by stir casting method. The hardness and the wear test were done over the AA2219 alloy material with reinforcement of 2, 4 and 6% of Tungsten carbide. The results showed that the reinforcement with 6% tungsten carbide had the highest strength of 35.14 BHN at 250 kgf. The statistical data for the wear rate were obtained for three different loads and were analysed by ANOVA. SEM analysis for 6% of tungsten carbide particles proves that there weren’t any grooves or loose fragments present.
