Abstract

In this paper, we report on a detailed investigation of the vacuum arc characteristic under axial magnetic field. Through the experiment we observed morphological changes in the vacuum arc and arc column constriction near the anode. With the simulation of the magnetic field between contacts, the influence of arc current, contact diameter and contact distance on the vacuum arc characteristic was analysed. We also summarize the duration of the constricted arc, the magnetic field threshold and the current threshold at the moment when the arc mode changed. The results in this paper could provide information of benefit to theoretical research on vacuum arcs and product development.
