Abstract

ABSTRACT The global market’s need to decrease costs, minimize health and environmental risks, and achieve cleaner manufacturing has resulted in a growing interest toward hard turning in the manufacturing sector recently. Al2SiO5, Sillimanite is an abundantly available ceramic material with superior properties that is naturally available in the coastal areas of the districts of Odisha and Tamil Nadu, India. In this study, the machining performance while using sillimanite (Al2SiO5) sub-micron particles as MQL additives along with environmentally friendly rice bran oil (RBO) was studied while turning AISI D2. The maximum temperatures at the cutting zones are 371.8°C, 352.4°C & 341°C with SiO2, Al2O3 and Al2SiO5 additives MQL, respectively. With Al2SiO5, the maximum flank wear is 49.9 µm which is significantly less than that of other additives SiO2, Al2O3. Sillimanite, an environmentally friendly ceramic particle with superior mechanical properties when used as an additive for MQL provides greener solution for sustainable machining.
