Abstract

An experimental study was made of the interaction of laser pulses with the free surface of a liquid under total internal reflection conditions. This interaction deformed the surface of the liquid. The deformation altered the divergence of the reflected beam and gave rise to a transmitted beam because of frustration of the total internal reflection conditions. Possible applications of this effect were considered.
