Abstract

Liquid sloshing in a storage tank is a common phenomenon that can significantly damage the tank structure by leading to high local pressure on the sidewalls. Faraday waves, a special phenomenon caused by vertical excitation, contribute significantly to sloshing. Therefore, a physical model test was conducted in this study to suppress Faraday waves by employing I- and ⊥-baffles. The experimental results indicated that the movement of the floating baffles enhanced their virtual height. Furthermore, the mass and added mass of the floating baffles were analysed. The suppression effect of the lighter floating I-baffle was better than that of the fixed baffle. The ⊥-baffle was proposed by adding a horizontal part at the bottom of the floating I-baffle, and it could improve the suppression effect when the floating baffles were heavy.
