Abstract

This paper proposes an experimental method for measuring the rotor eddy current loss in high-speed PM brushless DC motors. The principle of the method is to measure the loss when the rotor is stationary and the corresponding current harmonics are applied to the stator. The eddy current losses of the rotors with various types of retaining sleeve structures are measured and compared, and thus the validation of the experimental method is verified. Furthermore, the influences of rotor retaining sleeve structures, including stainless steel sleeve, non-conductive sleeve and laminated sleeve, with and without copper layer, on the rotor eddy current loss in a high-speed PM brushless DC motor have been comprehensively investigated.
