Abstract

The world’s current issues like environmental pollution and fossil fuel inanition made the researchers to discover the alternative to the fossil fuel. Biodiesel has potential in resolving current energy crisis because it is a clean burning diesel and renewable. The present work evaluates the performance and its combustion characteristics of a constant speed diesel engine which is fueled with blends of Eruca sativa as biodiesel. Biodiesel is prepared by conventional transesterification from taramira oil. For the blends TB10, TB20, TB30, TB40 and TB100 the physical–chemical properties (i.e. kinematic viscosity, pour point, density, flash point and calorific value) are measured, and tests were performed on CI engine and are compared with the diesel. The results shows, physical–chemical properties of taramira biodiesel and its blends meet the standard specifications of ASTM D-6751 and EN-14214, performance parameters for TB10 and TB20 like brake thermal efficiency, mechanical efficiency and indicated mean effective pressure are higher than the diesel, while brake specific fuel consumption is lower. For the combustion characteristics parameters with the use of biodiesel, significant changes are observed and are noteworthy.
