Abstract

A portable white light moiré interferometry unit was constructed and applied to ductile fracture analysis. Fracture parameters such as the J-integral, crack opening displacement (COD), and crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) were calculated or directly obtained from the moiré fringes and then used to analyze crack initiation and the subsequent stable crack growth of aluminum single-edge-notched (SEN) specimens. A brief sensitivity analysis is presented for moiré interferometry with real gratings. Advantages and disadvantages of white light moiré interferometry are also discussed.
