Abstract

A low-speed wind-tunnel investigation was conducted to evaluate the behavior of a morphable biplane configuration.Morphing encompassed a rotation of the wings around the fuselage such that they could bemerged to form amonoplane or split to form anX-shaped biplane. Circular arc and Clark Y wing sections were evaluated. The Reynolds number as well as the wing’s anhedral/dihedral angle were varied. The results indicated that the biplane increased the lift curve slope,maximum lift, and endurance parameter.However, the increase inwetted area caused a reduction in the range parameter. The proposed morphing concept would be beneficial for low-aspect-ratio geometries.
