Abstract

Application of the Direct Nyquist Array in Control Systems Design is investigated on an exothermic catalytic fixed-bed reactor. The reactor model is obtained by discretization of a distributed model. Static pre-and post compensators are determined, by an improved analytic technique, in order to minimize cross-couplings. The resultant control system is only partially able to suppress inlet step disturbances and does not compare favourably to stationary linear quadratic control with state estimation. The reason for this discrepancy probably is that the state decoupling in the frequency domain method only partially succeeded due to the time delays present in a distributed system.
