Abstract

Summary The investigations in the past decade have proven use of Nano-materials (nano-silica, nano alumina, nano zinc and nano iron) as a promising technique for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) and /improved oil recovery (IOR). Various non-magnetic metal oxide nano-particles and magnetic nanoparticles have been tested by researchers in the past and some of these nanoparticles reduced the residual oil in the rock matrix thereby increasing the ultimate oil recovery. Nano-particles are capable of withstanding high temperatures, pressures, shear and salinity, providing them an edge over the polymers. They tend to lower the interfacial tension (IFT), reduce the viscosity of oil, reduce the density and surface tension, improve emulsification and alter the wettability. For the Experimental work Nanoparticles used include Silicon dioxide, Aluminium Oxide, Zinc Titanate, and Ferromagnetic Nanoparticles. To observe the application of nanofluids in enhanced oil recovery, properties of nanofluids such as pH and turbidity were primarily observed. Our further investigation migrated towards emulsion studies where effects on thermal stability and viscosity were observed.The authors concludes by making recommendations for a successful Nano particles based EOR project, its simulation and supporting the review with the help of experiments conducted in the laboratory and a case study from India.
