Abstract
This volume represents a new in scientific publication: an investigative journal in the guise of a book; for there is little, apart from the hard cover, to distinguish this volume from an issue of Experimental Hematology or other investigative journals such as the Journal of Clinical Investigation . The volume contains 26 papers (by 104 authors), all purely investigative in both format and content. The genre has multiplied in recent years, apparently through the intensification of the publish or perish dictum. The content is the editors' selection of some of the papers presented at the ninth annual meeting of the International Society for Experimental Hematology held in Dallas in 1980. The bases for selection are not clear. Similar selections from previous meetings of the society, bearing the same title, have been published during the past few years.
