Abstract

In this letter, a scheme for generating terahertz (THz) linear frequency modulated (LFM) signals with large time-bandwidth product (TBWP) is experimentally demonstrated based on photonic quadruple frequency and photomixing. Benefited from the photonic down-conversion and de-chirping, the requirement of instantaneous bandwidth and sampling rate can be greatly relaxed. We successfully generate LFM signals with a bandwidth of 40 GHz in the THz band above 300 GHz, and a TBWP up to 40,000. The measured pulse compression ratio (PCR) of 45,455 indicates a great potential in improving range resolution. In addition, the generated signals can also potentially enable very high cross-range resolution in radar sensing and imaging.
