Abstract

Clear evidence of magnetic ordering at the Rh(100) surface has been obtained by measuring the linear magnetic dichroism in the angular distribution of the Rh- $3d$ photoelectrons. The experiment is performed by reversing the orientation of the magnetic moments using an external magnetic field and observing the difference in the core level line shape. Since the Rh- $3d$ levels exhibit a clearly resolved surface component, it is possible to associate the changes to magnetic ordering restricted to the surface layer.
