Abstract

Effect of high atomic number (Z) nanoparticles such as gold and platinum in radiation therapy has extensively been characterized in terms of enhancement in dose deposition owing to an increase in the probability of photoelectric interaction and subsequent increase in secondary electron generation. Recent studies demonstrating higher effective cell kill than estimated cell kill based on physical dose deposition due to radiation in the presence of gold nanoparticles point toward some additional biochemical effects.
