Abstract

The wide variety of structures found in complex carbohydrates of glycoproteins, glycolipids and bacterial polysaccharides makes it unlikely that simple answers will be found concerning the principles governing their conformation. Available evidence indicates that some oligosaccharides are flexible with conformational exchange of unknown kinetics among two or more conformers. This review covers the wealth of new experimental NMR spectroscopy and optical techniques published within the past year that will provide the basis for major adbances in understanding the conformation and dynamics of complex oligosaccharides.
