Abstract

A number of quinones have been studied by the magnetron technique of which only benzo-quinone and chloranil have been observed to capture electrons directly. The measured electron affinities at 0°K were 31.7±1.9 kcal/mole and 56.6±5.9 kcal/mole respectively. The other quinones which have been studied show evidence for ion formation by dissociative processes and in some cases it is possible to infer the energy of the bond broken.
