Abstract

Liquid–liquid equilibrium (LLE) data for the ternary system 2-methoxy-2-methylpropane (methyl tert-butyl ether) + o-cresol + water were experimentally measured at atmospheric pressure and temperatures of 298.15 K and 313.15 K. From the resulted distribution coefficient and selectivity, we can find that 2-methoxy-2-methylpropane is an efficient solvent to extract o-cresol. The consistency of experimental tie-line data was verified by the Hand and Bachman equations. The binary interaction parameters among these compounds were obtained through correlation of the experimental data with the nonrandom (NRTL) and universal quasichemical (UNIQUAC) models. Both models yielded results in good agreement with experimental data, and the average deviation of the NRTL model was even smaller than that from the UNIQUAC model.
