Abstract

Definitive immunologic measures used in the treatment or prevention of poison ivy dermatitis are thought by some to be based upon principles similar to those used in the treatment of immediate type allergy such as hay fever. It has been postulated that a blocking mechanism may be developed by injections or ingestion of poison ivy extract and that this may prevent subsequent reactions or sensitization to the offending agent. The present study throws doubt on this concept, at least insofar as its application to this type of contact sensitivity in experimental animals is concerned.
