Abstract

The 60fs-duration pulses generated by a colliding-pulse modelocked (CPM) dye laser have been fully characterized, for the first time, by measurements of their electric field using the frequency-domain phase retrieval method.1 The pulses are close to hyperbolic secant in amplitude, but with slightly more energy in the trailing edge, and are downchirped. This measurement provides direct evidence of the pulse asymmetry inferred by Finch et al.2
