Abstract

Wire ropes are the main element of lifting and handling equipments, they are constituted of several elements, the most important one is the central core (strand). The main objective of this work is the study of the problems occurring due to the risks of premature rupture of this element, that’s why we performed statics tensile tests on virgin central core and pre-damaged ones with 1, 2, …,6 artificially cut wires. Subsequently, we calculated and connected the reliability and the damage through the material’s life fraction, these two parameters allowed us to asses the degradation of the center core strand of the wire rope.
